My name is Debbie Ottman-Smith
I studied Fine Art in the 3 year Visual & Creative Arts program at St. Lawrence College Kingston. Graduated with honours as a painting major in 1978; having worked in my chosen media for over 10,000 hours each, I am now a master in both acrylic painting and graphite pencils.
I have been a commissioned portrait artist my entire life. Also studied portraiture with my highschool art teacher at Ottawa University [early 70s]. My work has been published several times over the years, most notable: [under married name Debbie Doogan] in Jaywalker magazine feature artist and cover photo of "No Boys Allowed"; my cartoons were published in the Perth Courier [my home town, maiden name Debbie Ottman].
I was invited to teach at the Kingston School of Art while showing my work at the first "A Joe Show" ...I was raising money for the Anaphylactic Network by selling my prints, a memorial drawing depicting much loved Kingston musician Joe Chithalen in a montage portrait, entitled "Memories of Joe".
Since then, I have been teaching drawing and painting classes for all levels of skill (specialize with beginners) 2000 ~ present and of course painting &/or drawing commissioned pieces including a published book, "The Magic Mirror".
I have several private students.
Contactable references are available upon request however here are a few accolades from both clients* and students:
* "It's like you looked inside my head and pulled it out onto your canvas."
* "...you've captured her better than the photograph did!"
"The classes were for everyone so she was teaching students with the medium of their choice, oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel. Her advice was most helpful because she passed on all the little titbits she had gathered over years of experience."
"Debbie Ottman-Smith is an incredibly gifted and intuitive artist and teacher. She has the ability to illustrate and explain both basic and advanced drawing and painting techniques in a manner that every student can understand and enjoy."
"I always learn something! whenever I come to one of her workshops"
"Very inspiring instructor ...an extremely supportive and positive energy"
